FAQs
What is the Burn Camp?
We call it a camp, but we will not be in tents – it’s an activity holiday where young people like yourselves who have had burn injuries, get together for a few days, make friends and have fun.
Where will it be?
This year we are going to ‘Low Mill Outdoor Education Centre’, an activity centre in North Yorkshire
How will we get there?
We are happy for families to bring their children to the camps, alternatively we can arrange transport – it’s about a 2-hour journey.
Who will be going?
There will be between 25 - 30 young people between the ages of 7 and 13. You may have already met some at previous burn camps and fun days, or on the Burns Unit.
Adult leaders will be there too of course.
Who will the leaders be?
The leaders will be staff and volunteers from Family Burns Club. There will also be other leaders from hospitals, and young leaders who have done their training with our burns club. All leaders will enjoy helping you have a good time at camp. Most activities will also have specialist qualified leaders from the centre.
Can mums and dads go?
Not to the camp, but there will be other events during the year where mums and dads will be welcome. We hope that part of the fun and challenge for you at camp will be the chance to be away from home by yourself.
What will we do?
This is the best bit – there will be lots of things to do every day, something we hope to be fun for everyone. We will have a choice of exciting challenges like climbing, abseiling, stream scrambling & canoeing, and chance to visit some of the interesting places. There will also be quieter activities like art and crafts, and probably a special event on the last night.
Some of you may have had your injuries recently and may not think you are able to take part in some of the activities – but we will do everything we can to help you join in – no one will be left out.
Where will I be sleeping?
The outdoor activity centre has a number of comfortable accommodation blocks. Although we will have our own Burns Club dormitories, we will / will not be sharing the centre with other young people.
What will the food be like?
Breakfasts and tasty evening meals will be served in the centres dining room. During the daytime we will be provided with packed lunches. At the centre we will be expected to help with setting tables etc. – but we’ll have a rota system, so you won’t have to do it every mealtime!
What should I take with me?
The outdoor activity centre provides special outdoor clothing – the main thing you will need to take is old clothes and trainers. We will send you a list of things nearer the time. Teddies are welcome!
Will there be any rules?
We will have as few rules as possible – mostly based on one simple rule – have respect for other people. The centre may have some rules of their own – mostly to do with safety. You will be expected to look after your own belongings and keep your room tidy – each year we have a tidy room competition’ (with prizes!)
